The CRC-400 boils too fast and spits out hot water, so you have to put in more water than you normally would. It is only slightly better in this regard than our old cheapo $15 rice cooker.
OK for white rice... but on-switch broke (no repair possible) July 14, 2010

This unit does a great job with white rice... HOWEVER as many reviews note it is not good with brown rice. It did not work for other grains I tried such as bulgar wheat. So it was usable BUT... after four years AND not a lot of use.. the spring loaded ON-SWITCH broke. Cuisinart offers no repairs for this problem. They were nice on the phone.

I purchased this unit and after reading the other reviews, I was a little ambivalent as to how useful it would be. I decided to give a try for myself. It is great help to be able to cook rice/pasta and not have to worry about the food burning because it was left the stove on too long. However, there a couple of things that detract from its usefulness. If you are cooking something with just one or one and a half cups of liquid, then it is not a problem. When you cook more than that amount, the liquid will boil over. When I cook something that requires more liquid (such as risotto) I leave the lid off and that way, it does not boil over. It does sort of defeat the purpose of "steaming" rice rather than "boiling" rice, but it is a lot less messy. Secondly, the pot insert which is supposed to be non-stick surface is very thinly coated and mine has already been scratched on the bottom. The thought that I have ingested that coating with my food does not make for a very appetizing nor healthy meal! The steam insert is great to have, as you can put the veggies into the steamer and put that on top of the cook pot while the rice is cooking. My suggestion to the manufacturer would be to redesign the steamer insert so that there is not a groove at the bottom which can trap food and bacteria and which is difficult to clean. Also, they should make the cook pot coating more durable so that it does not peel off with normal use. Apart from these two issues, I find that having a rice cooker/steamer is a very convenient item to have and the size of this particular cooker does not take up too much counter space and it pleasing to look at.

Just returned this rice cooker, because it boiled over and made a big mess every time I cooked brown rice. When I called Cuisinart they said the only way to stop it would be to add butter to my rice! Even though the agent was very polite, that is a ridiculous solution. How about designing a cooker that doesn't boil over?

I purchased this rice cooker for my daughter to take to college. We tried it out ahead of time to see how it would work. I have owned two rice pots in the last 30 years. Each has made perfect rice. Each lasted way longer than I had the right to expect.
This little pot was cute and compact but the water overflowed every time we cooked leaving goopy liquid on the lid, down the side of the pot and on the counter. We reduced the water (which does not really work when you are trying for perfect sushi rice) and the problem was reduced but not eliminated. If you are interested in anything but dry rice, select another rice cooker.
